SportsSpain midfielders Fabian Ruiz and Gavi were honored in their hometown of Los Palacios y Villafranca after winning the 2026 World Cup. As part of a local tradition, they received their body weight in tomatoes: 85kg for Ruiz and 68.5kg for Gavi. The pair, who play for Paris St-Germain and Barcelona respectively, wore their gold medals during an official reception at the town hall, greeted by a large crowd. Former Spain winger Jesus Navas, also from the same town and a 2010 World Cup winner, attended. The town council announced that football fields will be renamed after Ruiz and Gavi, and a monument will be built to honor all three local World Cup champions. The tomato gift tradition has become a hallmark for honoring the municipality's great athletes.
