Charley Hull hit her birdie putt off the green and ended up making a NINE on the fifth hole
The wind appeared to strengthen in the afternoon, with several players struggling against the conditions. Hull finished her round at six over par, largely due to a quadruple bogey on the par-five fifth.
Hull had been putting for a birdie and only deftly tapped the ball with her putter, but the ball caught a slope and ran off the back of the green. She failed to chip back onto the green twice before finally getting back on and holing out. The costly error left Hull at six over par.
Defending champion Lottie Woad struggled to find early momentum, going three over through her first four holes, and went on to card a two-over-par 74.
