NEW DELHI — Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been invited to participate in the BRICS summit scheduled for September 12–13 in New Delhi, according to Shama Obaid, Bangladesh's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
Ms. Obaid told journalists in Dhaka on Thursday (July 23, 2026) that Mr. Rahman received an invitation from the Indian government to attend the summit as a guest.
This marks the first BRICS summit since Mr. Rahman assumed power in February, following a landslide victory for his Bangladesh Nationalist Party in the general election held after nearly 15 months of an interim government in Dhaka. His first two foreign trips after taking office were to Malaysia and China last month, where he met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Pending Issues Between India and Bangladesh
Several important discussions remain pending between India and Bangladesh due to the absence of high-level contacts since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024. Key among them:
