US Space Force swears in first 18 part-time guardians from Air Force reserves

The U.S. Space Force has transferred 18 Air Force reservists into part-time roles, making them the service's first-ever guardians to serve on nonsustained duty. This move follows a broader effort to rebuild personnel after sweeping federal cuts left the Space Force with nearly 800 fewer civilian employees. The Personnel Management Act, established in the fiscal 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, enables this new single-component service structure, allowing guardians to move between full-time and part-time positions throughout their careers. Brig. Gen. Matthew Holston stated the initiative demonstrates commitment to a flexible, modern personnel system. Lt. Gen. Douglas A. Schiess, nominee for Space Force Chief, noted that many civilian employees took voluntary separation initiatives, prompting Space Systems Command to hire 100 civilians monthly. The new structure places all guardians under a unified Space Force chain of command, with unchanged pay, benefits, and retirement. About 225 more Air Force reservists are expected to transfer in the coming months.
