Vincenzo Montella took over as national coach in September 2023 and led Turkey to qualification for both Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup. At the tournament held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, the Turkish team — including Real Madrid star Arda Güler — was eliminated in the group stage.

After Turkey's World Cup exit, Montella said:
"If the question is: Do I want to resign? Then the answer is: No. I still have energy and passion. If someone wants me to resign, then they have to accept that I will not do that."
The president of the Turkish Football Federation, İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu, backed him up:
"We stand behind the coach and the players. This is not just any club. You can't simply give away 15 players and bring in 15 new ones. You can't fire the coach and bring in another. You can't fire the president and install a new president. That's why we stand behind our players."
