Naval Group selects Saft next-gen Li-ion batteries for submarines

Saft, a TotalEnergies subsidiary and advanced battery specialist, has been awarded a major contract by Naval Group to supply next-generation lithium-ion battery systems for the Barracuda and Scorpene submarine families. The contract marks a strategic milestone for Saft, strengthening its position in European defense programs. Saft's proprietary Li-ion batteries offer higher energy density for longer underwater endurance, enhanced operational performance, and total operational safety compared to lead-acid technologies. The partnership, resulting from years of collaboration, highlights European industrial strength and supports sovereign defense capabilities. Saft's mastery of the entire battery value chain, from electrochemistry to production, was a key differentiator. CEOs Cedric Duclos (Saft) and Pierre Éric Pommellet (Naval Group) emphasized the technology's role in setting new standards for submarine performance and European technological sovereignty.
