Spanish town Foios plans to award honorary citizenship to World Cup hero Ferran Torres

July 22 – According to Spain's El Mundo, in the small town of Foyos in Valencia, Spain, Ferran Torres' name has become an eternal legend. After he scored a golden goal in extra time of the World Cup final, the town of fewer than 8,000 people erupted in celebration. Not only are his fellow townspeople immensely proud of him, but the local government is also preparing to award him the title of "Honorary Citizen."

A Moment for the Ages

It was a moment comparable to Andrés Iniesta's match-winner in 2010. Just after the start of the second half of extra time, Spain launched a collective attack. A Family Connection

Laura, a relative by marriage of Ferran's family, runs a bakery in town. Because she had to get up at 4:30 a.m. to open the shop, she couldn't stay up to watch the long extra time.

On the town's streets, retired firefighter Alfredo and his friends were celebrating. He praised Ferran:

"This kid has talent, drive, and above all, he's very humble. He's our pride."

Another neighbor, Joaquín, said he had predicted Ferran would score a week earlier.

"At the moment of the goal, I was in the bar, speechless and crying, until I saw him lift the trophy."

Joaquín also remembered that after Ferran won the Copa del Rey, he specifically greeted his daughter. "He's a very good, very sincere person. He deserves everything he has now."
