Samsung Electronics America cuts 739 jobs as HQ moves to Texas

Samsung Electronics America (SEA) announced that 739 roles at its Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey campus have been affected by its planned headquarters relocation to Plano, Texas. A majority of affected workers received relocation offers, while others were let go. Separately, about 100 employees in Plano, including mobile division staff, lost their jobs. The cuts represent nearly 62% of SEA's New Jersey workforce of 1,200. Samsung SDS America also flagged 179 potential job cuts in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, tied to its own headquarters relocation. The job reductions come less than a year after Samsung announced the move, which New Jersey officials criticized as driven by Texas's lower taxes and business-friendly regulations. The cuts highlight a stark contrast within Samsung: its chip business is projected to see a 19-fold profit surge due to AI demand, while the mobile division faces its first recorded quarterly loss. Employees fear further cuts and potential division mergers as Samsung directs more resources toward chips.
