On July 21, 2026, during Spain's World Cup victory celebration in Madrid attended by over two million fans, defender Marc Cucurella grabbed the microphone at Plaza de Cibeles and led the crowd in singing a mocking song aimed at Norway striker Erling Haaland. The chant, which goes 'Haaland is trembling because Cucurella is coming,' was first popularized after Spain's 2024 European Championship win. The song originated from Chelsea supporters, for whom Cucurella played until recently, and was adapted to taunt Haaland during their Premier League rivalry. Haaland previously dismissed the chants, noting that Cucurella had asked for his shirt after a match. The Norwegian striker scored against Cucurella's Chelsea in a 2-0 Manchester City victory following the 2024 Euros. Cucurella has since transferred from Chelsea to Real Madrid.

Madrid – He just can't help it. The Spanish national team celebrated their return to Madrid with an estimated two million fans following their World Cup triumph. After parading through the metropolis in an open-top bus, the team gathered for the main celebration at Plaza de Cibeles, where each player was individually honored.
When Marc Cucurella (27) grabbed the microphone, he once again launched into his now-famous song about Norway superstar Erling Haaland.
Cucurella shouted: "Haaland is trembling!" The crowd answered in chorus: "Because Cucurella is coming!"
The defender first performed the mocking tune after Spain's 2024 European Championship title.
Background of the Rivalry
The chant likely has little to do with sporting rivalry. Norway and Spain last faced each other in 2023 during European Championship qualifying — with Haaland on the pitch, but without Cucurella.
Instead, the song originated with fans of FC Chelsea, for whom Cucurella played until recently. Chelsea supporters sang to the melody of the cult hit "La Bamba":
"Cucurella, Cucurella / He eats paella / He drinks Estrella / And his hair is damn thick."
The Haaland version emerged later, presumably because both players were competing in the Premier League at the time, and Haaland is one of the league's top strikers.
Haaland's Response
The Norwegian has taken the chants in stride. Speaking to Norwegian platform Viaplay two years ago after Spain's European Championship triumph, Haaland said:
"Last year he asked me for the shirt, and now he starts singing about me. He can do what he wants, I don't really care."
At the time, Haaland delivered the sporting response in a direct Premier League duel with Cucurella's Chelsea, scoring the opening goal in Manchester City's 2-0 victory.
What's Next
Haaland will miss the chance for sporting revenge in the English league this season. Cucurella moved from Chelsea to Spanish record champions Real Madrid this summer — a loss for the Londoners, especially given that the Cucurella song originally came from Chelsea fans.
