Sporting Braga president António Salvador stated the club's ambition to go as far as possible in the UEFA Conference League, implicitly targeting the title. Speaking before the team's debut match against Serbian side Zeleznicar Pancevo, Salvador noted that Braga is the second-best ranked team in the competition and has a strong European history, including a Europa League final appearance in 2011 and a semi-final last season. He emphasized the club's responsibility in European competitions and hinted at winning the trophy, something Braga has not yet achieved. Regarding the transfer market, Salvador said the squad is 90 percent closed but acknowledged possible arrivals and departures before the August 31 deadline. The match is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:00 PM in Pancevo, Serbia.
Source report
Sp. Braga president António Salvador has declared the club's ambition to "do what has not yet happened" in the UEFA Conference League, as they prepare for their debut in the competition on Wednesday against Serbian side Zeleznicar Pancevo.
Speaking on Tuesday before the team departed from Francisco Sá Carneiro airport, Salvador acknowledged the club's strong European pedigree:
"It is the first time we enter this competition, and we have a history [in Europe] built so far in much more demanding competitions, such as the Europa League and the Champions League. We are the second best-ranked team in this competition and we have aspirations to go as far as possible."
High Ambitions in Third-Tier Competition
While emphasizing that the level of demand remains the same "in every game and every competition," Salvador made clear the club's lofty goals in UEFA's third-tier competition:
"We are the club we are and we have responsibility in European competitions, and therefore we want to go as far as possible, and that, obviously, is to do something that has not yet happened."
The statement was an implicit reference to winning the tournament.
European Track Record
Sp. Braga's recent European history includes:
- 2010/11: Europa League finalists, losing 1-0 to FC Porto
- Last season: Europa League semi-finalists, eliminated by German side Freiburg
Transfer Market Update
Regarding squad movements, Salvador noted that the transfer window remains fluid:
"In today's global football, you can never say it is closed" until August 31, and therefore "there may be arrivals and departures, but the squad is 90 percent closed."
