SportsSlavko Vincic, a 46-year-old Slovenian referee from Maribor, has been appointed to officiate the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium. He is the first person from Slovenia to referee a World Cup final. Vincic, who also officiated the 2024 Champions League final and the 2022 Europa League final, was emotional upon receiving the news, describing it as a dream come true. He will be assisted by fellow Slovenians Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic, with German Bastian Dankert as VAR. Vincic has refereed Spain three times (all wins) and Argentina once (their 2022 loss to Saudi Arabia). At this tournament, he has officiated three matches, including a round-of-32 game where he sent off Ecuador's Piero Hincapie.
