Real Sociedad's Icelandic striker Orri Óskarsson scored in the 19th minute of a preseason friendly against Racing de Santander, continuing his impressive scoring streak from the end of the 2025-26 season. Óskarsson, who scored four goals in his last five matches last season and 10 goals in 914 minutes overall, made his preseason debut as a starter after missing the first test against Pau FC. The goal came from a combination play involving Barrenetxea and Marchal, with Marchal setting up Óskarsson for an empty-net finish. The article notes that Óskarsson is considered one of Real Sociedad's great hopes for the 2026-27 campaign, though his starting role may require Mikel Oyarzabal to shift to a number 10 position. The match took place on July 18, 2026, less than two months after Óskarsson's last competitive goal on May 23.

Orri Óskarsson has begun the preseason as if he never took a break, scoring on his first opportunity in the friendly against Racing de Santander. The goal continues the impressive scoring streak he carried at the end of last season, when he netted four goals in his last five matches. As MARCA has previously reported, the Icelandic striker is one of Real Sociedad's great hopes for the 2026-27 campaign.
Óskarsson, who did not feature in the first preseason test against Pau FC due to joining preparations later, made his preseason debut for Real as a starter against Racing de Santander. He needed only 19 minutes to open his scoring account.
Real's number 9 had barely settled into the match, as Racing were playing the better football. However, a fine combination from Barrenetxea to Marchal saw the latter find himself in a two-on-one situation with Racing's goalkeeper. Marchal unselfishly laid the ball off for Óskarsson to score into an empty net, bringing a smile to the Icelander's face.
Oyarzabal Would Need to Change Position
Óskarsson has started the preseason in the best possible way, maintaining the scoring form he displayed at the end of last season. He scored in four of his last five matches, and in five of his last eight overall. His most recent goal before this friendly came on May 23, meaning he was celebrating again less than two months later.
The Icelander scored a total of 10 goals in 914 minutes on the pitch, giving him a spectacular average of one goal per game. Based on these numbers, he is one of Real Sociedad's great hopes for 2026-27. However, for him to start regularly, Oyarzabal would either have to be benched — an unlikely option — or play as a number 10, where those who wear that shirt typically operate. The latter is a more viable possibility, even though Oyarzabal has been excelling as a striker in the World Cup.
