Kylian Mbappe won the Golden Boot as top scorer at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with 10 goals, becoming the first player in men's World Cup history to win the award twice and in consecutive tournaments. Despite France finishing fourth, Mbappe's individual performance was historic. His 10 goals are the third-most in a single men's World Cup, behind Just Fontaine (13) and Sandor Kocsis (11). Mbappe also surpassed Lionel Messi for the most career World Cup goals with 22, one ahead of Messi, who finished second in the Golden Boot race with eight goals. At 27, Mbappe is expected to extend his record at the 2030 World Cup.

Kylian Mbappé and France may not have achieved the finish they wanted at the 2026 FIFA World Cup (fourth place), but the French star delivered an historic individual performance.
With 10 goals, Mbappé claimed the Golden Boot award as the tournament's top goal-scorer — winning it for the second consecutive World Cup. It is an unprecedented accomplishment.
First Player Ever to Win Golden Boot Twice
With his Golden Boot win — secured by scoring a pair of goals in the third-place game on Saturday — Mbappé became the first player in men's World Cup history to win the award twice. The fact that he did so in consecutive tournaments makes the achievement even more remarkable.
His 10 goals are the third-most ever in a single men's World Cup, trailing only:
- Just Fontaine (France, 1958) — 13 goals
- Sándor Kocsis (Hungary, 1954) — 11 goals
All-Time World Cup Goals Record
Mbappé's 10 goals also brought his career World Cup total to 22, putting him one goal ahead of Lionel Messi for the most World Cup goals ever.
Messi finished second in the Golden Boot race this year with eight goals. He had an opportunity in Sunday's championship match to at least match Mbappé and regain his lead on the all-time list, but Argentina was unable to score in a 1-0 extra-time defeat against Spain.
Given that Mbappé is only 27 years old and is expected to remain a key player for France for at least one more World Cup cycle, there is a strong chance he will extend that record at the 2030 World Cup.
