DC National Guard commissions first maritime security vessel

The District of Columbia National Guard has commissioned its first maritime security vessel, marking the first time an Army unit in the nation's capital will operate a waterborne platform. The vessel is assigned to the 260th Special Purpose Brigade, which was created in response to a 2025 executive order by President Donald Trump addressing a 'crime emergency' in Washington, D.C. The vessel, acquired through a partnership with the U.S. Navy, will support waterborne security operations during major events like Fourth of July celebrations. Army Col. Larry Doane, commander of the brigade, emphasized the vessel's role in deterrence and rapid response. The brigade plans to acquire four additional vessels and coordinate with the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department's fleet. Army Brig. Gen. Leland D. Blanchard II called the capability an investment in partnerships and readiness to protect the capital.
