West Indies legend Holding: Sobers 'stood out' among the greats

West Indies cricket legend Garfield 'Garry' Sobers died at age 89 in Barbados on July 17, 2026. Former West Indies bowler Michael Holding paid tribute, saying Sobers 'stood out' even among cricket's greats and remained humble. Sobers played 93 Tests from 1954 to 1974, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and taking 235 wickets at 34.03. He held the record for the highest individual Test score (365 not out) for 36 years and was the first to hit six sixes in a first-class over. Holding noted that Australian great Ian Chappell called Sobers 'the best cricketer that ever lived.'
