DC National Guard commissions first maritime security vessel

The District of Columbia National Guard has commissioned its first maritime security vessel, assigned to the 260th Special Purpose Brigade. The brigade was created in response to a 2025 executive order by President Donald Trump addressing a 'crime emergency' in Washington, D.C. The vessel, acquired through a partnership with the U.S. Navy, is the first waterborne platform operated by an Army unit in the nation's capital. It will support waterborne security operations during major events like Fourth of July celebrations and enhance homeland defense. Army Col. Larry Doane, the brigade commander, emphasized the vessel's role in deterrence and rapid response. The brigade plans to acquire four additional vessels and coordinate with the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. Army Brig. Gen. Leland D. Blanchard II called the capability an investment in partnerships and readiness to protect the capital.
