Southampton boss Tonda Eckert admits authorizing spying, says punishment 'hurts'

Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has publicly admitted it has been 'tough to read' the judgement on his role in the 'Spygate' scandal, which saw the club expelled from the Championship play-offs in May 2026. The club admitted to spying on three clubs during the season, including filming Middlesbrough's training before the play-off semi-final. Middlesbrough were reinstated to the final but lost to Hull City. As punishment, Southampton will start the new Championship season on minus-four points. Eckert, who authorised the spying, apologised and said he is responsible. The Football Association is conducting an ongoing investigation into individual conduct, which could result in bans. Despite the scandal, owner Dragan Solak has publicly backed Eckert, saying he will not sack him. Eckert described the owner's support as 'humbling and massive' and said the club is now focused on preparing for the new season with positive energy.
