Lorde has voiced strong criticism of Spotify's latest feature, which uses artificial intelligence to generate summaries of songs on the platform.
The Grammy-winning singer took to social media on Thursday evening to share a screenshot of herself listening to Current Affairs, a track from the Virgin album, on Spotify. The screenshot displayed an AI-generated paragraph purportedly describing the song.
In her post, Lorde described the summary as inaccurate and argued that it could detract from the listening experience.
"Hey Spotify, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say we don’t want this," the Royals singer wrote.
"Not only is this [information] inaccurate [...] but reducing a song to an AI-generated meaning right at the source feels like it limits free interpretation imo."
She added: "At least make it possible for artists to opt out please."
Spotify Responds
In a statement to HuffPost UK, a Spotify spokesperson defended the feature, saying: "We built ‘About The Song’ because fans want to dig into the stories behind the music."
They added: "It’s still in beta. The info comes from articles across the internet, and when something’s off, we move fast to fix it, like we did here. Getting it right matters to us."
Not the First Artist to Speak Out
Lorde is not the only musician to publicly take issue with Spotify's interface.
In 2022, as Adele prepared to release her album 30, she revealed that she had convinced the platform to remove the "shuffle" button from album pages. This change ensured that albums would play in the order intended by the artist.
"We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason," Adele said at the time. "Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended. Thank you Spotify for listening."
