Google signs investment and offtake deal for largest US solar project

Google has signed a deal with Cypress Creek Energy to invest in and receive energy from the Steel River Energy Center, expected to be the largest solar facility in the United States. Located in Mississippi County, Arkansas, the project will have a capacity of 2.5 GWdc of solar and 2.9 GWh of battery storage, built in three phases. Google will act as an anchor investor and offtaker, signing a power purchase agreement for the first two phases (1.6 GWdc and 1.9 GWh storage). The project is expected to create 700 construction jobs per phase, generate $300 million in local tax revenue, and include $8 million in community investments. Solar panels will be made entirely in the U.S., with nearly all steel sourced locally. The facility is expected to be fully online by 2029. The deal comes as Google's emissions have risen due to AI buildout, with its 2025 carbon footprint 81% higher than its 2019 baseline.
