Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow joins Manchester United on free transfer, first direct move in 22 years

Leeds United declined to name bitter rivals Manchester United after confirming goalkeeper Karl Darlow had left the club to join the Red Devils on a free transfer.

The 35-year-old becomes Manchester United's second signing of the summer, adding competition to the club's goalkeeping ranks. Senne Lammens remains the number one at Old Trafford.

Darlow departs Elland Road after three years, during which he made 38 appearances for Leeds.

Leeds Statement Omits Manchester United

In announcing his exit, the Yorkshire club conspicuously avoided naming Manchester United as his next employers, reflecting the intense rivalry between the two sides.

A Leeds United statement read:

"Leeds United can confirm Karl Darlow has left the club upon the expiration of his contract to pursue an opportunity elsewhere.

"Despite the offer of a new deal to remain in West Yorkshire, the goalkeeper wished to explore a different challenge and leaves the Whites with the best wishes of everyone at Elland Road."

"Thank you Karl for your dedicated service to Leeds United, we wish you and your family the best for the future."

Darlow's Reaction

Speaking after his move was made official, Darlow said:

"I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United. I'm joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I'm really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands.

"This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my team mates and helping to drive the group forwards."

Wilcox on New Signing

Manchester United's director of football, Jason Wilcox, added:

"Karl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level, his work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad. We are delighted to add a player of his quality and experience to our excellent goalkeeping group."

Historical Context

Darlow is the latest in a long line of players to swap Leeds for Manchester, though he is the first in 22 years to make the direct move. High-profile names to have transferred between the two clubs include:

United's Summer Business

Away from Darlow, Manchester United have also strengthened their midfield this summer, completing deals for Andre Santos (from Chelsea) and Youri Tielemans (from Aston Villa) for a combined £85 million.
