US Space Force offers $25,000 bonus for 8-year enlistments in new pilot program

The U.S. Space Force launched an Initial Enlisted Bonus Pilot program offering a $25,000 bonus to new enlistees who commit to eight-year contracts, on a first-come, first-serve basis until 100 bonuses are awarded. The program runs from July 1 to Nov. 30, 2026. Chief Master Sergeant John Bentivegna explained the service aims to transition to an eight-year enlistment model due to the extensive training required for specialized fields like cyber defense, space operations, and intelligence. All enlisted members require Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information clearances, adding to training timelines. The Space Force, the smallest DoD service with 10,400 authorized personnel, faces retention challenges from the commercial space industry. The bonus is paid after successful completion of technical training, which can take up to two years. Bentivegna emphasized that financial incentives alone won't retain talent, highlighting opportunities like a 40-hour master's program through the Air Force Flight Test School.
