US Space Force pilots $25,000 bonus for 8-year enlistments

The U.S. Space Force announced a new pilot program offering a $25,000 bonus to enlistees who commit to eight-year contracts, running from July 1 to November 30, 2026, with a cap of 100 bonuses on a first-come, first-served basis. Chief Master Sergeant John Bentivegna explained that the service aims to transition to an eight-year enlistment model due to the extensive training required for specialized roles like cyber defense, which can take up to eight years to develop fully qualified noncommissioned officers. The Space Force, the smallest DoD service with an authorized end strength of 10,400, faces challenges in building proficiency in its three major career fields: space operations, cyber, and intelligence. All enlisted members require Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information clearances, adding a recruitment filter. The bonus is paid upon successful completion of technical training, which can take up to two years. Bentivegna noted that while financial incentives help, retaining talent against commercial space industry competition requires offering unique opportunities, such as a 40-hour master's degree program through the Air Force Flight Test School.
