Before the 2026 World Cup semifinal between France and Spain in Dallas, a minute of silence was observed to honor the victims of the 2016 Nice truck-ramming attack, which killed 86 people and injured over 400. The tribute, held on the exact 10th anniversary of the attack (July 14), was requested by Nice mayor Eric Ciotti and supported by the French Football Federation. FIFA granted the request, and French President Emmanuel Macron also presided over a ceremony in Nice. French supporters in Dallas had earlier held their own minute of silence and sang the Marseillaise. The moment of remembrance was respected by the entire stadium audience.

Eric Ciotti's Request Granted
The tribute was made possible following a request by the Mayor of Nice, Eric Ciotti. Supported by the French Football Federation, Ciotti asked FIFA President Gianni Infantino to observe a minute of silence.
"A gesture of remembrance would demonstrate the solidarity of the great football family towards the victims of terrorism and their loved ones," the mayor stated days earlier. His request was granted, as announced by President Emmanuel Macron on the eve of the World Cup semi-final.
