Mensah, who played 114 matches for Auxerre and won the Ligue 2 title in 2024, was out of contract. Cologne, who finished 14th in the Bundesliga last season, had been tracking him for some time. Thomas Kessler, CEO of FC Cologne, praised Mensah's international experience, tactical discipline, and defensive qualities. Auxerre, which finished 15th in Ligue 1, had already anticipated his departure by signing Sékou Fofana from Lausanne-Sport.

Ghanaian international defender Gideon Mensah has signed a two-season contract with FC Cologne after departing AJ Auxerre. The 27-year-old left-back spent four seasons with the French club, making 114 appearances and winning the Ligue 2 title in 2024.
Mensah, who has earned 44 caps for Ghana, was a recent participant in the Round of 16 of the World Cup, where Ghana lost 1–0 to Colombia.

"Combative, generous, and always irreproachable on the pitch, Gide will leave a very positive impression at AJA and with all its supporters," the Burgundy club said in a press release. Auxerre finished 15th in Ligue 1 last season.
The club had already anticipated Mensah's departure by announcing on July 8 the signing of young Franco-Ivorian defender Sékou Fofana (23 years old) from Lausanne-Sport on a four-year deal.
