TMZ reports that a man carrying carpet samples was seen leaving McConnell's residence on Friday. Charlie Cotton, a Washington, D.C., producer for the tabloid, was at the house seeking information about McConnell's health—about which his office has remained virtually silent. Cotton spoke with the man off-camera, who said that in addition to new carpet, new tiles were also being considered for the home.

Speculation about McConnell's condition has intensified since his hospitalization on June 14. Unconfirmed reports have suggested he is brain-dead, while fellow Republicans claim to have had lengthy conversations with him. McConnell's Senate office has offered no updates, stating only that he is receiving "excellent care."

Video footage taken by a neighbor on the day of McConnell's hospitalization showed a stretcher being led away by first responders, with police blocking the street. The person on the stretcher did not appear to be moving, and the neighbor noted that first responders showed no urgency.

McConnell lives in the Washington home with his wife, former Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao. The timing of the flooring replacement—while McConnell remains hospitalized—has fueled questions about whether it signals a change in his condition or preparations to sell the property. As long as McConnell's family and staff remain silent, such developments are likely to amplify conspiracy theories and rumors.

White House North Portico Undergoes Renovations Without Congressional Approval

President Donald Trump continues to transform one of the nation's most iconic buildings into an active construction site, with taxpayers expected to cover the costs.

The front doors of the White House, facing Lafayette Park and pedestrian traffic, are currently undergoing security improvements as repairs are made to the iconic columns on the North Portico, CBS News reported Friday.

Tarps were spotted on the front of the North Portico on Friday, printed with images of what the structure should look like while renovations proceed underneath.

This is the latest renovation project undertaken without congressional approval, which is required for any construction on federal land. For months, Trump has treated the White House—which belongs to all Americans, not just the president—like one of his resort properties.

Last month, Trump began construction on a helipad on the South Lawn without official notice. Simultaneously, the administration moved to renovate the South Portico and resurface the driveway.

The White House later demanded the contractor accelerate the helipad project's timeline, adding $875,000 to the already $13 million price tag. Contractor documents showed a last-minute demand to complete construction by mid-September in anticipation of an "upcoming state visit." The request came days after Trump invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit the White House on September 24. The North Portico project is also estimated for completion around mid-September.
