Henderson to Miss Remainder of World Cup After Freak Injury
Jordan Henderson will miss the rest of the World Cup after breaking his wrist in a freak accident, but the veteran midfielder wants to stay with the squad in the United States.
Marc Guehi has confirmed that Henderson is "on the road to recovery" after the incident, which left the entire England squad "scared."
What Happened
Henderson suffered a badly broken wrist after climbing back over advertising boards to celebrate with travelling fans following England's win in Mexico. The 36-year-old midfielder will undergo surgery and will now miss the remainder of the tournament — a heartbreaking outcome given this could be his last major championship.
Henderson was carried out of the stadium on a stretcher, required oxygen, and was rushed to hospital in Mexico City for treatment. The rest of the squad flew back to Kansas City after their famous victory.
Henderson's Commitment to the Squad
Despite the injury, Henderson is keen to remain with the rest of the team to offer his support and has been in regular contact with his England teammates.
England defender Marc Guehi provided an update on the FA's Lions' Den show:
"Hendo's good, man. Hendo's in a better place than he was yesterday, and it was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we're just glad that he's on the road to speedy recovery."
A Historic Career
Henderson earned his 90th cap for England when he came off the bench against Panama in the group stage — his only appearance in this tournament. That appearance made history, as he became the only men's player to appear in four World Cups.
He remains a huge presence and figure in the dressing room, making his absence a significant blow for the squad even if he has not played many minutes. Henderson's hope is to rejoin the group to provide his support and backing.
Team Recovery and Rest
Guehi also stressed the importance of recovery after the Mexico match. Head coach Thomas Tuchel has given the players two days off — aside from recovery sessions — with family and friends invited into the camp in Kansas City.
Guehi added:
"I've spoken about it quite a bit. The most important thing is to disconnect from every single thing possible. Some lads like to play golf, some lads like to go into the city if they've got time and explore. That part is really important to make sure that when you come back, you are super focused."
