Damascus — An explosion was heard in Damascus on Tuesday, July 7, according to multiple journalists on the ground, including those from Agence France-Presse. The blast occurred as French President Emmanuel Macron is making the first visit by a Western leader to Syria since the rise to power of an Islamist coalition led by Ahmed Al-Sharaa.
Members of Syrian security forces were deployed near the hotel where President Macron spent the night in central Damascus. He had already left the hotel in the morning for talks at the presidential palace when the explosion was reported.
According to images from Syrian state television, Ahmed Al-Sharaa welcomed the French head of state just minutes after initial reports of the explosion emerged. Witnesses reported seeing smoke rising from an area near the hotel.
