A joint statement issued during the visit expressed “serious concerns” about the prevailing situation in the South China Sea and East China Sea. Japanese officials spoke candidly to the media about the need to address the Taiwan issue peacefully.

Focus on India’s Northeast

Although a planned visit to Guwahati was dropped, Ms. Takaichi underscored Japan’s attention to India’s northeastern regions by linking them with “relevant partners and regional organisations” of the Bay of Bengal region. BIMSTEC was identified as a partner organisation for Japan. With major investments in Bangladesh and Thailand, Japan aims to connect these projects—including the Matarbari port in Cox’s Bazar—through an “industrial value chain” with India’s northeast, which could boost regional prosperity and security.

Strategic Outlook

Ms. Takaichi has outlined a broad framework of cooperation extending from India’s neighbourhood to the Pacific Ocean, designed to safeguard the India-Japan relationship from the uncertainties of the current world order. However, both sides must effectively manage multiple other relationships—particularly with China and the U.S.—to protect their strategic interests and avoid conflict. For India and Japan, navigating global turbulence may well be a path of mutual learning and cooperation.
