WTA Introduces Gender Tests for Women's Tennis Tournaments
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has implemented mandatory gender testing for all players to participate in tournaments, effective July 2026. The policy aligns with the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) new guidelines, which exclude transgender women from women's competitions. The decision follows controversy at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where boxers Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting competed despite being excluded from previous world championships due to gender test issues. World number one Aryna Sabalenka publicly supported the move, stating that biological males have an unfair advantage. The test involves detecting the SRY gene on the Y chromosome via saliva, buccal swab, or blood sample, with few exceptions for disorders of sex development.
