World’s Oldest Sweet Shop Retains 19th-Century Best Sellers After Nearly 200 Years

The Oldest Sweet Shop in Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest, continues to thrive after 199 years in business. Current owner Ben Howie, who took over in 2021, reports that traditional hard-boiled sweets from the 1820s, such as pear drops, humbugs, and bonbons, remain the store's best sellers. This enduring popularity suggests that British consumer preferences for confectionery have remained relatively stable over nearly two centuries. Located in a 400-year-old building, the small shop attracts approximately 20,000 visitors annually, including international tourists drawn by its nostalgic atmosphere and original features like antique glass jars and a rescued till. While modern candies like Haribo gummy bears also sell well, the classic treats define the shop's identity. The family-run business, assisted by Ben’s brother James, has adapted to modern economic pressures by raising prices on some items and launching an online store. Despite these changes, the owners prioritize preserving the historical integrity of the shop, aiming to maintain this unique piece of cultural heritage for future generations.
