WNBA Approves Sale and Relocation of Connecticut Sun to Houston Rockets Owner

The WNBA and NBA boards of governors have unanimously approved the sale and relocation of the Connecticut Sun to Tilman Fertitta, owner of the Houston Rockets. The league officially announced the decision on Wednesday, finalizing an agreement reached in March where the franchise was sold for $300 million. The Connecticut Sun will complete their 2026 season in Connecticut, playing most home games at the Mohegan Sun Arena, along with scheduled matches in Hartford and Boston. The team is set to relocate to Houston before the start of the next season. Sun president Jen Rizzotti emphasized the importance of focusing on the current season and providing a memorable experience for fans during the team's final year in Connecticut. She noted potential positive outcomes from joining an organization with significant resources and infrastructure, particularly under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Current staff members may have opportunities to transition to the new Houston-based operation. The Mohegan Tribe, which purchased the franchise in 2003 and moved it from Orlando, will cease ownership as the team prepares for its new chapter in Texas.
