WHO: Passengers Evacuated from Norovirus-Affected Cruise Ship in France

The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that passengers aboard the cruise ship Ambition, which docked in Bordeaux, France, have been evacuated following a norovirus outbreak. WHO Regional Director for Europe, Hans Kluge, announced via social media that approximately 50 individuals contracted the virus, which causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms. After undergoing health examinations and quarantine measures, the remaining passengers were allowed to disembark. Kluge praised French authorities for their rapid, transparent, and compassionate response to the incident. Although one passenger died from suspected gastroenteritis prior to the evacuation, no other serious cases were reported. Kluge clarified that this outbreak is unrelated to the hantavirus cases previously seen on the MV Hondius. He emphasized the importance of quick action, testing, and clear communication as cruise travel increases during the summer season. The incident serves as a practical example of effective public health management in containing infectious diseases on board vessels, ensuring passenger safety while minimizing broader health risks.
