When the Oasis of Stars Turned into a Fire Apocalypse
In early January 2025, devastating wildfires broke out across the US West Coast, with the most severe fires occurring in the Santa Monica Mountains north of Los Angeles. The Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, and Sunset Fire destroyed tens of thousands of buildings, killed dozens, and forced over 100,000 residents to evacuate. Hurricane-force Santa Ana winds (up to 129 km/h) and eight months of drought created explosive fire conditions. The fires spread to Hollywood Hills and threatened iconic landmarks. President Joe Biden declared a disaster area, and Mayor Karen Bass called it the largest firestorm in the city's history.
