WhatsApp Tests 'After Reading' Timer for Disappearing Messages

WhatsApp is currently testing a new enhancement to its disappearing messages feature, dubbed the 'After Reading' timer. Unlike the existing functionality where the deletion countdown begins immediately upon sending, this new option initiates the timer only after the recipient has opened and read the message. This update addresses a common limitation where messages could vanish before being seen if the recipient was delayed in checking their phone. Spotted in the latest iOS beta via TestFlight, the feature allows senders to set messages to disappear 5 minutes, 1 hour, or 12 hours after being viewed. If the message remains unopened, it will automatically delete after 24 hours. Notably, the sender's view of the message disappears 5 minutes after sending regardless of recipient action, while the recipient's view follows the new logic. The feature is optional, not enabled by default, and can be activated on a per-chat basis. A wider rollout is expected in the coming weeks following tests on Android. This development follows WhatsApp's recent introduction of an Incognito Chat mode for Meta AI, highlighting the platform's continued focus on privacy-centric communication tools.
