WBD Advances Sports Strategy Amid Pending Paramount Acquisition
Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is actively pursuing its independent programming strategy despite the looming $110 billion acquisition by Paramount Global. During its recent upfront presentation to advertisers, WBD executives addressed the pending merger, acknowledging the significant changes ahead while emphasizing operational continuity. The company highlighted its robust sports portfolio, including live coverage of MLB, NHL, French Open tennis, NASCAR, and the Big 12 Conference. Additionally, WBD teased future content involving Dunkman, a professional dunk league founded by Shaquille O’Neal. Notably, the presentation did not mention an expanded March Madness format, although WBD holds rights to the tournament. The potential merger with Paramount, led by CEO David Ellison, is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approval. If completed, the combined entity would possess one of the industry's largest sports rights portfolios, excluding the NBA. Plans also include merging HBO Max with Paramount+. However, the deal faces scrutiny from state, federal, and international regulators concerned about market consolidation.
