Vizag flights shift to Bhogapuram from August 17; INS Dega closed to scheduled services for 30 years
The Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation has notified that all scheduled commercial flight operations will shift from Visakhapatnam Airport (INS Dega) to the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram effective 00:01 hours on August 17, 2026. The international aerodrome code VTZ will also transfer to the new airport. The Ministry ordered a 30-year closure of scheduled commercial services at INS Dega, with exceptions for Indian Air Force, armed forces, police, national emergency flights, and government VIP aircraft. Non-scheduled commercial flights may continue at INS Dega. The transition follows the inauguration of the ₹4,727-crore greenfield airport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 1, 2026. Built by GMR Group in 31 months, the Code E airport can handle six million passengers annually in its first phase. The 2,700-acre facility is expected to boost industrial growth, exports, and tourism across Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam districts.
