University of Benin Unveils N100 Billion Trust Fund for Infrastructure Development
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has officially unveiled a N100 billion trust development fund aimed at revitalizing its deteriorating infrastructure and enhancing institutional facilities. The initiative, inspired by the funding model of the University of Oxford, seeks to finance projects such as ultra-modern student hostels, a five-star hotel, and a state-of-the-art sports complex across its campuses. Vice Chancellor Edoba Omoregie highlighted the urgent need for the fund, citing severe financial challenges and rapid decay of academic and residential facilities observed upon his assumption of office. He noted that the university previously struggled with basic utilities, including electricity disconnections. To oversee the fund, a Board of Trustees has been inaugurated, chaired by former Edo State governorship candidate Osagie Ize-Iyamu. Ize-Iyamu announced that the formal launch is scheduled for July 4, 2026, expressing confidence in raising the target amount through contributions from alumni, philanthropists, and other stakeholders. The fund aims to establish a sustainable financial framework to support excellence in teaching, research, technology, and human capital development, ensuring the institution remains competitive and capable of delivering quality education for future generations.
