Uniper selects SLB Capturi for carbon capture at UK gas power project
Uniper has selected SLB Capturi as the preferred technology licensor for carbon capture at its proposed Connah's Quay Low Carbon Power (CQLCP) project in Deeside, UK. The decision follows a competitive front-end engineering and design process that began in December 2024. The project will use SLB Capturi's Big Catch amine-based carbon capture technology, designed for flexible operation alongside gas turbines to balance fluctuating electricity demand and renewable intermittency. The system includes anti-mist and energy saver systems for low emissions and high efficiency. The planned facility, adjacent to Uniper's existing power station, aims for up to 1.38GW capacity in two phases, enough to power about 1.1 million homes. Captured CO2 will be piped to the HyNet industrial cluster for permanent storage in repurposed offshore gas fields. Engineering partners include Worley and Siemens Energy. The project is subject to planning consents, with a Development Consent Order decision expected soon and potential first-phase operation by 2030. If it proceeds, this would be SLB Capturi's first major deployment in large-scale gas-fired power generation.
