UDF names V.R. Sudheer as nominee for Kochi Corporation deputy mayor election
The United Democratic Front (UDF) has nominated four-time Congress councillor V.R. Sudheer as its candidate for the Kochi Corporation deputy mayor election, scheduled for Wednesday. Sudheer represents the Elamakkara South division. The post has been vacant since May 13, when incumbent Deepak Joy resigned after being elected as Thripunithura MLA. The UDF holds a majority with 48 members (including one Independent) in the 76-member house, making the outcome a foregone conclusion. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has fielded P.J. Yesudas, and the BJP has nominated first-time councillor Jalaja S. Acharya. The Congress had previously arranged split terms for the deputy mayor and mayor positions between its 'A' and 'I' factions. Sudheer's selection was finalized in a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party chaired by District Congress Committee president Mohammed Shiyas.
