Travis Kalanick's robotics company Atoms raises $1.7B led by a16z
Travis Kalanick's robotics company, Atoms, has raised $1.7 billion in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), with Ben Horowitz joining the board. Other participants include Bain Capital, Fifth Wall, and notably Uber, reconnecting Kalanick with the company he founded and was ousted from in 2017. Atoms is a rebranded holding company built on Kalanick's ghost kitchen venture Cloud Kitchens, and recently acquired Pronto, a heavy industry automation firm run by former Uber colleague Anthony Levandowski. Kalanick has expressed ambitions to expand into mining and build a 'wheelbase for robots,' aiming to digitize the physical world through software-controlled manufacturing, storage, and transportation. The funding will likely support hiring and development of AI and robotics systems to boost productivity in physical industries.
