TotalEnergies and partners open hybrid renewable project in South Africa
A consortium led by TotalEnergies, alongside Hydra Storage Holding and Reatile Renewables, has inaugurated the Hydra hybrid renewable energy project in South Africa's Northern Cape province. The facility includes a 216MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant integrated with a 500MW-hour battery energy storage system (BESS). It is designed to supply 75MW of dispatchable renewable electricity to the national grid under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom, delivering over 400 GWh of electricity per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 200,000 South African households. TotalEnergies and Hydra Storage each hold a 35% stake, with Reatile Renewables holding 30%. The project is part of South Africa's Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme and the Just Energy Transition initiative.
