TNAU forecasts pre-sowing price for small onion around ₹30 to ₹35 per kg at harvest time
The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has issued a pre-sowing price forecast for small onions, estimating farm gate prices of ₹30-35 per kg at harvest time. The forecast, by the Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) of TNAU's Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, is based on time series analysis of Dindigul market prices over 15 years and a market survey. Key producing areas include Dindigul, Tiruppur, Perambalur, Trichy, Namakkal, Theni, and Madurai, with additional supply from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Small onions constitute about 80% of Tamil Nadu's total onion production, cultivated on 0.44 lakh hectares yielding 5.28 lakh tonnes in 2024-25 (average productivity 12 tonnes/hectare). Tamil Nadu is a major export hub, supplying to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Nepal, with exports accounting for 5-10% of output. Strong international demand is reported this season.
