TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee Moves Supreme Court to Challenge Travel Ban for Eye Treatment
Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee has approached the Supreme Court challenging a Calcutta High Court order that refused him permission to travel abroad for eye treatment. The High Court, in a July 20 order by Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, extended Banerjee's interim protection from coercive action until October 6 in a case related to alleged intimidatory statements during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign. However, the court denied his travel request, stating it was not inclined to allow foreign travel while the investigation is ongoing, noting that several reputable eye clinics exist in Kolkata. The judge orally suggested Banerjee consult the head of ophthalmology at state-run SSKM Hospital. Banerjee's Supreme Court plea challenges this restriction, though the matter has not yet been listed for hearing.
