Tinubu Defends Support for Dangote Refinery as Strategic Move

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has defended his administration's support for the Dangote Refinery, characterizing it as a crucial strategic decision for national energy security. Speaking on the sidelines of the 13th Africa CEO Forum in Rwanda, Tinubu argued that Nigeria, with its population exceeding 200 million, would face a major crisis amidst current global conflicts without domestic refining capacity. He emphasized that the country's heavy dependence on petroleum products necessitates local production to ensure survival and stability. The President highlighted specific government interventions, including granting free trade licenses and assisting in crude oil sourcing, which have enabled the refinery to export Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and aviation fuel. These remarks come against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, where ongoing conflicts have disrupted global oil supplies and increased market volatility. By supporting Aliko Dangote's initiative, the Nigerian government aims to reduce reliance on imported refined fuels, alleviate pressure on foreign exchange reserves, and strengthen energy independence.
