Thailand’s First Gripen E/F Fighter Jet Enters Production in Sweden
The first Saab JAS 39 Gripen E/F fighter jet for the Royal Thai Air Force has officially entered the production line at SAAB’s facility in Linköping, Sweden. This milestone follows a contract signed in August 2025 under the 'Peace Burapha 1' programme, valued at 19.5 billion baht, to procure four aircraft. Thai Air Force Commander-in-Chief Seksan Kanta traveled to Stockholm to monitor progress and discuss future defense cooperation with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). The procurement program spans fiscal years 2025 to 2029, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2029. These new jets are intended to replace aging F-16 A/B fighters stationed at Wing 1 in Nakhon Ratchasima province. Thailand also plans a second phase in fiscal year 2028 to acquire an additional four aircraft, aiming for a full squadron of twelve Gripen E/F jets. This development highlights ongoing military modernization efforts and strengthened defense ties between Thailand and Sweden.
