Tesla Beats Delivery Estimates but Faces Investor Scrutiny on AI and Robot Spending
Tesla reported second-quarter deliveries of 480,126 vehicles, beating Wall Street estimates of 406,600 and marking a 25% year-over-year increase. The strong delivery performance boosted Tesla's global BEV market share by 95 basis points and US share to 46.1%. However, investor focus is shifting to Tesla's massive $25 billion capital budget for 2026, funding AI infrastructure and Optimus humanoid robot development. Analysts expect free cash flow to be negative $3.25 billion for the quarter. Bank of America remains bullish with a $460 price target, citing robotaxi expansion to five markets and competitive pricing. Optimus production is targeted for late July or August. However, Swissquote analyst Ipek Ozkardeskaya notes Tesla has spent only $2.5 billion of its budget so far, raising concerns about underspending on key growth drivers amid political controversies and Chinese EV competition. Shares were flat ahead of the earnings report.
