Tencent Announces $100 Million Investment to Re-enter India's E-Gaming Market
Chinese e-gaming giant Tencent is making a strategic move to re-establish its presence in India, years after its popular game PUBG Mobile was banned in the country. The company has announced a three-year partnership with the Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) and the Game Developers Association of India (GDAI). As part of this initiative, Tencent commits over $100 million to support India’s e-gaming ecosystem. The funds will be allocated towards curriculum development, industry training, and mentorship programs, aiming to help train and employ two million skilled professionals in the sector by 2030. Danny Marti, Tencent’s head of public policy, emphasized the goal of combining local creative strengths with Tencent’s expertise to build a globally competitive ecosystem. This announcement marks Tencent’s first significant step toward rebuilding operations in India following the 2020 regulatory restrictions on Chinese apps. Additionally, the company plans to launch new gaming titles in the Indian market in the coming months, including the global hit Honor of Kings, signaling a potential shift in the regulatory environment for China-based tech firms in the region.
