Tampa Bay Rays Reach Tentative Deal for New $2.3 Billion Stadium in Tampa

The Tampa Bay Rays have reached a tentative financing agreement, formalized as a memorandum of understanding, to construct a new $2.3 billion baseball stadium in Tampa, Florida. Under the proposed deal, Hillsborough County will contribute approximately $796 million, while the City of Tampa will provide $180 million, both funded through sales taxes and other revenue sources. The Rays organization plans to cover the remaining $1.27 billion, including any cost overruns. The new facility is targeted for completion by the 2029 Major League Baseball season, with the team continuing to play at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg until then. The agreement includes a 35-year lease, ensuring the franchise remains in the Tampa Bay area for decades. This development follows the collapse of previous stadium proposals in St. Petersburg and significant damage to Tropicana Field caused by Hurricane Milton in 2024. The project has garnered support from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Major League Baseball, despite historical reservations about public funding for sports venues. Upcoming votes by the Hillsborough County Commission and Tampa City Council will determine the final approval of the public contributions.
