Swara Samrat Festival: The sound of a new generation
The second Delhi edition of the Swara Samrat Festival, held recently, featured only young musicians. The festival opened with a dhrupad vocal recital by Bangladesh-born Niloy Ahsan, who presented Mian ki Malhar but was criticized for an overlong alap and poor time management. Next, Farrukhabad gharana tabla artiste Ishaan Ghosh, son of Pt. Nayan Ghosh, delivered a polished and mature performance in teentaal, showcasing compositions from multiple tabla traditions. The concluding artiste was sitarist Mehtab Ali Niazi, accompanied by his brother Khurram on tabla. Mehtab, from the Bhendi Bazaar gharana, also played Mian ki Malhar, showing novelty in his jhala patterns but lacking full command over raga exposition. The festival, which began 14 years ago in Kolkata in memory of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, has expanded to other cities over the past three years.
