SSE Wins Planning Consent for Scotland's Sloy Pumped Storage Conversion Option
SSE has received Section 36 Planning Consent from the Scottish government to upgrade the Sloy Hydro-electric Power Station at Inveruglas on Loch Lomond. The approval gives SSE the option to convert the facility into a pumped storage hydro scheme offering up to 16GWh of long-duration electricity storage, and potentially increase generation capacity from 152.5MW to 160MW. The Sloy Power Station, commissioned in 1950, is the UK's largest conventional hydro-electric plant, currently generating around 130GWh annually. Upgrades involve installing new pumps to move water from Loch Lomond to Loch Sloy using existing pipelines. SSE hopes to reach a final investment decision in late 2027, with the new scheme potentially commissioned by the end of the decade. The project aims to enhance grid flexibility, reduce renewable energy curtailment, and support Scotland's energy future.
